SERVICES

Digital Engineering
& BIM

A good digital engineer is a mix of draughtsman, BIM manager, QS, surveyor, site engineer and planner. Using a range of tools to resolve issues, avoid re-work on site, and save time for your pre-construction and site management teams.

Temporary works detailing • BIM documentation and strategy • Construction sequences • Swept path analysis • Model coordination • Bid writing • Design and marketing • Video editing • 4D planning • Takeoffs from models • Structural draughting • Logistics layouts •

WHAT WE DELIVER

Common deliverables across every project phase

From initial tender through to handover, the scope of digital engineering spans the full project lifecycle. Below is a breakdown of what this looks like in practice.

Tender

  • Review tender documents for BIM requirements, give advice on impact and cost for the project.

  • Conduct drone photo / video survey avoiding the need for site visits.

  • Complete takeoffs from the models which is faster and more accurate than a Bluebeam measure.

  • Produce visuals and renders for construction sequences or highlighting your method.

  • Produce visuals and renders for construction sequences or highlighting your method.

  • Complete swept path analysis to confirm vehicle movements through the site.

  • Create drawings such as crane layouts, logistics drawings, sequences, temporary works etc.

  • Assist with bid writing, and generating other supporting documents.

Pre-Construction

  • Arrange laser scanning or complete Scan-to-BIM.

  • Complete drone, 360° photo / video survey, creating a record of existing site or building conditions.

  • Setup shareable 3D logistics models including cranes, hoists, pit lanes, traffic management etc.

  • If the project is 'Digital Build', create 3D models for elements in your scope of works.

  • Arrange temporary works design or complete temporary works drawings.

  • Review consultants drawings and models for design errors or to identify value add opportunities.

  • Setup timelapse camera/s.

  • Setup model viewer (Trimble connect or similar).

  • Create site induction video or similar.

Construction

  • Compare consultants tender models vs. construction to identify variations. And repeat this for new revisions during construction phase.

  • Ensure you and your subcontracts meet the clients BIM requirements as set out in the contract, tender and ISO 19650.

  • Complete regular drone and 360° image captures to track site progress (hosted in web app).

  • Complete checks for pour volumes / orders using the models.

  • Maintain as-built 3D models as required.

  • Coordinate subcontractor models, such as checking the steel model against reinforcing for clashes.

  • Produce marketing videos or other media to publish on your website and socials.

  • Maintain live federated model viewer and coordination tool. Such as Revizto, Trimble connect, ACC, Navisworks or similar.

  • Setup and maintain augmented reality viewer.

  • Conduct laser scanning and complete as built modelling and verification.

POPULAR SERVICE

PDF to RVT

Have you asked the designer for their 3D model, and been told there isn't one? I can help. I can take 2D drawings and convert them to highly detailed 3D Revit models. Containing connections, reinforcing, and anything else you need. This service is also useful for converting historic 2D drawings to 3D models.

DIGITAL ENGINEERING

Examples

Here are a selection of detailed examples of practical Digital Engineering.

  • GJL - Paternoster Sq Logistics V3 Page 002.jpg

    Site layouts and Swept Paths

Complete internal and external layouts showing hoists, cranes, pit lanes, safe routes, laydown areas etc. Swept path analysis is used to check vehicle routes to, from -  and within the site.

This service isn't limited to me drawing your logistics. I will use my experience to investigate different logistics solutions and to propose options to you.

  • 21 Lombard Crane Drawings Liam Page 004.jpg

    Crane Selection and Lift PLanning

Using your lifting parameters, I can help to select and optimum crane size and position. For complex projects where the crane interacts with the existing or new structure, I utilise 3D models to validate the install and operation of the crane.

Crane layouts help to validate your construction method, ensuring that your programme for deliveries, installations, or removal of waste is realistic and achievable.

  • FOR PRESENATATION.jpg

    Takeoffs and Model Comparisons

On most commercial projects 3D design models are available from the consultants, such as Architects and Structural or Services engineers.

While these models aren't at fabrication level, they are still excellent for performing checks to validate your price and programme.

Give your quantity surveyors confidence by doing checks on total tonnages or volumes. Test your programme by getting piece counts and weights of steel by level.

Additionally, Tender issue models can be compared against construction issue. This can help you to instantly generate variations or to identify design changes that weren't obvious or clouded on the drawings.

    Detailing and sequencing

I have experience working on a wide range of temporary structures,  particularly propping for large excavations or cut and carve demolition. With extensive experience in steel detailing and ensuring seamless erection / buildability of steel structures.

This isn't a simple draughting service. I can work with your engineer (or I can arrange one), helping to develop the design and sequence for temporary works installation and removal.

    On Site and In Office

Viewing and interrogating 3D models is one of the most basic digital construction functions, and also one of the most under-utilised during construction projects. It is the first step in reducing project costs by implementing digital tools.

There are a range of model viewer tools that I can implement and manage on your projects. Some tools are free and some require ongoing subscriptions. I will help select an option that best suits you can give you ongoing support to get the most out of 3D models viewers.

HOW WE WORK

Flexible, practical engagement

settings_edited.png

Flexible Engagement

It doesn't have to be all or nothing. Engage a digital engineer for 1, 2, or 3 days per week, one week a month, or whatever suits you. I can work remotely, in your office, or on site as requried.

BIM Manager

Some projects require a BIM manager, full 3D design coordination and attendance at BIM meetings. If you don't have an in house BIM resource, but are required to implement BIM on a project, get in touch.

Tender Support

Struggling to understand what you are signing up for? I can review the documents, advise on project BIM costs, and help formulate a clear and confident plan. Generally I give tender advice free of charge.
